Ozarks Technical Community College Gallery October Artwalk
Thu 9/18/2008 1:03 PM

Hi Everyone!

I want to introduce myself...Kat Allie. I am a full-time Fine Art Instructor and Gallery Manager for OTC and an adjunct art instructor for MSU (and I am also a resident artist in Randy Bacon's Monarch Art Factory). We are having a great artist Carol Dickie for October Artwalk and I wanted to share this information with the arts community...

An excerpt from an interview concerning Carol Dickie's exhibit "Wild Traceries": "Trees are like people, only better," she said. "They teach about respect and personal space, patience, endurance, how to listen and how to instruct in the ways of beauty without preaching." A native Texan, Dickie has called Beaver Lake home for four years. Her dream has always been to paint.

"I spent my early life in creative endeavors, from writing to photography to drawing. "I loved black and white photography, still do, but always felt my work was missing something." That something, said Dickie, "was more than just color: it was watercolor. Watercolor is at once the most difficult and the easiest medium to paint with. It's difficult when you over-control it and easy when you get out of the way.

"When I finally got into painting, it was an amazement. I found I could not only capture the image but also bring to it my response. Like a conversation, really."

In addition to Ozark material, other paintings were inspired by scenes in Colorado, Wyoming, Texas and New Mexico. "I love the west, particularly the high country," Dickie said. "The light is amazing, and in the summer I can go into the forest and paint au plein air."

In addition to painting au plein air, Dickie also sketches on location and photographs her scenes, returning to her studio to complete her large mixed water media paintings. Most of her work is on 300 pound archival watercolor paper. In addition to watercolor, she often uses acrylic, casein, gouache, pastel and charcoal. (Web Note: WOW!!! THANK YOU KAT !!!)

KOLR-KSFX TV News Director to address Creamery Writers
Wed 9/17/2008 7:38 PM

At its Sept. 25th meeting in The Creamery Arts Center across from Hammons Field (7pm to 8:30pm), members of The Creamery Writers' Workshop will learn how to edit copy for the airwaves under the able tutelage of Missouri native Polly Van Doren-Orr who recently marked her 27th anniversary in television news broadcasting.

Following graduation from college in 1981, Van Doren-Orr joined WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky, where she was an anchor/reporter. From 1990 to 1994, she was with WTVW-TV in Evansville, Indiana, as anchor and managing editor. She joined KOLR-TV in 1994 after moving back home to Missouri, and she has been News Director since 1998. She was the primary architect of the 2000 launch of the successful FOX broadcast on KDEB, now KSFX.

Under her leadership, the KOLR-KSFX news operation tripled weekday morning news content from one hour to three hours, and the nightly FOX broadcast expanded from 30 minutes to one hour. She is active in the Radio-Television News Directors Association and she is frequently requested as a seminar facilitator, panelist and awards judge.

Sept. 25th, Van Doren-Orr will talk on, "From Facts To Broadcast", presenting a series of facts and then having the workshop attendees re-write or edit them for use on the airwaves. The Creamery Writers' Workshop is free and open to all writers, regardless of age or level of expertise and is a literary outreach program of the Springfield Regional Arts Council.

For directions or more information, call Springfield Regional Arts Council, 417-862-ARTS(2787).

11th Annual Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street
Wed 9/17/2008 9:51 AM

The 11th Annual Cider Days, presented by Great Southern, will be held on Historic Walnut Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., this Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, in Downtown Springfield. This two-day fall festival will feature regional artists and crafters, three performance stages, a free hands-on children’s area with inflatables, a Scarecrow Village, vintage cars and much more. Admission is $4 per person; children 10 and under are free. Last year’s event attracted more than 15,000 individuals to the annual celebration.

Artists and crafters from across the region exhibit at Cider Days, selling a variety of handmade products. Artwork sold during past festivals include Raku-fired clay pieces, hand-dyed silk scarves, paper Christmas ornaments, preserved hydrangea, painted pumpkins, candles and much more. All artwork is reviewed in advance to ensure quality.

Throughout the two days, artists can often be found demonstrating the various arts and crafts at their individual booths. Children also can demonstrate their own creativity in the free hands-on area sponsored by MOST – Missouri’s 529 College Savings Plan and OzarksMoms.com.

Each year, more than 300 individual performers showcase their artistic skills on three Cider Days performance stages including the Hoover Music Bandstand Stage, The Coffee Ethic Showwagon Stage and the “Music at the Inn” Stage. The festival features local and regional talent including musicians, dancers, singers and more.

One of the festival’s most creative displays is the “row of crows” also known as The Scarecrow Village. The village, located just east of the intersection of Walnut Street and John Q. Hammons Parkway, consists of multiple scarecrows designed by area businesses, service groups, churches, youth groups, schools and individuals. The scarecrows serve to heighten community awareness of various local groups and services, as well as provide an opportunity for the community to unite and share creative energy, spirit and pride. Cash prizes will be awarded at the festival in the following categories: Best of Show, Most Humorous, Most Creative, Best Use of Recycled Materials and Best Named Scarecrow. The public will have the opportunity to vote for their “favorite crow” to be registered for a chance to win $100 in Cider Days Art Bucks.

After enjoying time at Cider Days, the public also will have the opportunity to take a free shuttle from the festival grounds to enjoy Downtown Springfield on Saturday, as well as take part in the Commercial Street Loft Walk on Sunday. On Saturday, Sept. 20, the free shuttle will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to the various restaurants and shops located downtown. The shuttle also will run on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., to Commercial Street for the public to participate in the Commercial Street Loft Walk. Tickets for the loft walk will be available both Saturday and Sunday at Cider Days. The shuttle service will pick-up and drop-off from the northeast corner of Walnut Street and John Q. Hammons Parkway. Shuttle service is sponsored by J. Howard Fisk Limousines, Inc.

As part of the Cider Days weekend of events in Downtown Springfield, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and City of Springfield will host a free Autumn Moon Concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, at Jordan Valley Park, 735 E. Trafficway. The free concert will feature local bands M-DOCK, Thirst N’ Howl, and Steve Smith and the Sneakers, playing a variety of Blues, Rock, R&B, and cover songs. The schedule for the evening is: 7 – 7:50 p.m., Steve Smith and the Sneakers; 8 – 9:15 p.m., Thirst N’ Howl; 9:30 – 11 p.m., M-DOCK.

Cider Days on Historic Walnut Street is sponsored by Great Southern, CoxHealth, Hoover Music Company, MOST - Missouri’s 529 College Savings Plan, The Coffee Ethic, Reliable Superstore, Welk Resorts, Ozarks Coca-Cola Dr Pepper Bottling Company, ClearChannel Radio, The News-Leader, Springfield-Greene County Parks and Recreation, Historic Walnut Street Association, and managed by the Urban Districts Alliance.

Ozark Mountain Bank to host art exhibition
Mon 9/15/2008 4:26 PM

The Springfield Regional Arts Council will partner with Ozark Mountain Bank (400 S. Business 65) in Branson to host an Art in Public Places exhibit featuring artist Helen Long of Branson. The exhibit opens with a reception on Tuesday, September 30, from 4 p.m. to 6p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public and will remain through November 11.

“There is beauty everywhere if you take time to look, a knot hole, a shell, says Long. "People can look too far and search too long for something to paint when every object has it’s own particular beauty.”

Born in San Francisco, Long worked as an artist for Hallmark Cards for four years. Also an illustrator, she has illustrated “Traces of Silver”, designed a coloring book for the Branson area, painted a map for the Kimberling City Chamber of Commerce and has designed illustrations for numerous magazines. Long has won many awards over the years, but her biggest thrill in her career so far was being accepted into the recent 2008 Watercolor USA show.

“Virginia Woolf” receives raves from the public and the press

“That Edward Albee's ‘Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ remains so entertaining nearly 50 years after its premiere is a tribute to the caustic playwright's skill with dialogue and characterization. We might not want to be on George and Martha's guest list ourselves, but it's certainly fun watching talented actors fire away at each other during the three-hour-long theatrical assault.
Director Robert Bradley's compelling staging at the Vandivort ushers in the venue's new season...” Larry T. Collins, Springfield News-Leader, September 9, 2008.

Landmark Conservation Mural in Springfield by Internationally Acclaimed Artist Susan Sommer-Luarca
Sun 9/7/2008 9:55 PM

Internationally acclaimed wildlife artist, Susan Sommer-Luarca and her not-for-profit foundation, Susan Sommer-Luarca For Habitat (SSL4HABITAT), have formed a partnership with Wehrenberg Theatres, the nations largest mid-west theatre chain. This partnership will support SSL4HABITAT's mission; "To preserve wildlife and its habitat through sharing art and education."

The first giant mural will be painted at the Campbell 16 cinema, located at South Campbell and 4005 South Avenue. The 30 feet tall and 380 feet long mural is to be created on the giant, west facing wall on Campbell Ave. This mural's theme is "WILD HORSES". Susan Sommer-Luarca who started her foundation in 2006, is an internationally known and widely acclaimed artist. Susan's support of wildlife and indeed her driving passion to bring awareness to the threat of much of our wildlife and their continued threatened habitats, is the artist's well known mission of her SSL4HABITAT foundation. From her gallery in Springfield , Missouri Susan stated; " SSL4HABITAT is very fortunate to have such a great partner as Wehrenberg Theaters, such a company who makes this commitment, helps immensely in helping the foundation bring its message of conservation and preservation of wildlife nationwide". While the artist has traveled nationwide painting murals for the foundation of any number of different species and habitat, the focus of "Wild Horses" is truly near and dear to the Susan's heart. While the wild horse population is continually under pressure and ever shrinking, Missouri is left with only one wild herd of 20 horses in Shannon County. The mural project will be started on September 10, 2008 and its completion is slated for September 29, 2008.

ABOUT SUSAN SOMMER-LUARCA

Susan Sommer-Luarca painted live at all three legs of the 2007 and 2008 Triple Crown as well as Official Triple Crown Artist 2008, and was invited to paint live at the NFL Experience at Super Bowl XLII. She has been selected to be the Official Artist of the 2008 Preakness® Stakes. Susan Sommer-Luarca is also an Official Artist of the 2008 USA Olympic Team for the 2008 Bejiing Olympic Summer Games.

Susan Sommer-Luarca was born and raised in southwest Missouri on her family's farm. Susan grew up with respect, love and compassion for all animals. At the early age of eight and with no formal art training, Susan was drawing and painting the many horses on the farm with great attention to detail. As Susan grew, so did the scope and scale of her art. Susan has been painting larger than life murals and fine works of art for more than twenty years, detailing wildlife and its habitat for all to enjoy. From her huge eighty-foot life-size blue whales to stampeding wild horses, Susan has painted her murals across the USA .

Over twelve years ago Bass Pro Shops, a world wide and known supporter of conservation and wildlife recognized Susan's artistic talent and her love for all that is wildlife. Bass Pro Shops commissioned Susan to paint her larger than life murals in many of their Outdoor World stores across America . In 1995, Susan painted what at the time was the largest continuous indoor mural in the United States . At over 14,000 square feet the mural depicted an underwater scene with an array of oceanic life including coral reefs, whales, sharks, stingrays and a variety of other sealife. Susan's work has been seen and aired by many of the major national media outlets including, NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, ESPN, NY Times, LA Times, Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune and People magazine, just to name a few. In 2006 Susan started her own wildlife conservation and preservation foundation, the "SSL for Habitat." Formed as a not-for-profit organization. Susan is committed to her vision of garnering awareness to the necessary preservation of wildlife and its supporting natural habitat. Susan intends to help educate the world through her larger than life murals which will be painted from coast to coast and around the world.

Bittersweet Beginning to the Springfield Symphony’s New Season…
Thu 8/28/2008 2:44 PM

On Saturday September 13, 2008, the Springfield Symphony will begin its 74th season with a tribute to Samuel “Sam” Minasian, beloved Concert Master Emeritus, who sadly passed away over the summer. Sam served as Concertmaster of the Symphony from 1969-2000 thrilling audiences with his artistry and winning them with his charm, while taking the Orchestra to ever greater heights through his masterful leadership and musicianship. Upon his retirement in May 2007 Governor Matt Blunt sent a proclamation to recognize and honor his extraordinary service to the arts in Missouri. The Symphony is dedicating the opening concert to Sam, and with his loving wife Joyce, is proud to announce a scholarship fund in his name.

As is only fitting, the Symphony will begin the season with a program full of soaring strings and is delighted to welcome the return of Violinist, Michael Ludwig, Concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic, and Mark Kosower, Principal Cellist of the Bamberg Symphony, to play the intensely romantic Brahms Double Concerto. They were actually scheduled to play this incredible piece in January 2007 when fate – in the form of the infamous ice storm - intervened!

The evening will begin with Verdi’s Force of Destiny Overture from his epic opera about love, passion and betrayal in a time of war, and end with Tchaikovsky’s most beloved work, Symphony No. 4, full of dramatic fanfares and a raise the roof ending that is out of this world.

Michael Ludwig
Mark Kosower

Don’t miss this opportunity to join the Springfield Symphony in celebrating the legacy of a beloved friend and the beginning of what is “destined” to be another truly great season!

April 5, 2007

Dear Governor Blunt:

I am writing to recommend that a proclamation be issued to Samuel “Sam” Minasian for his outstanding service to the Springfield Symphony and the Springfield community. In May 2007, he will retire from the Springfield Symphony after 35 years as Concertmaster and first Violinist.

Sam was only six years old when a violin was first placed in his hands. At age 13, he displayed his talent to patients in veteran’s hospitals, and also played in Red Cross shows. Originally from Chicago, Sam performed in and won a variety of music contests held in his hometown and placed second in the Chicagoland Music Festival Violin Contest at Soldiers Field in 1945.

In 1950, Sam graduated from Cornell College in Iowa. He then attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and it was there that he received his master’s degree. In 1956, Sam fulfilled his duty to the U.S. Army after having been deferred from the draft for six years.

Sam has dedicated his professional career to the people in the Springfield area since arriving here in 1969 to accept a position at Drury University (formally Drury College) as a Professor of String Instruments. He was an integral part of the music department at Drury, including his position as the conductor of the Drury-Evangel Orchestra.

Sam has tirelessly and joyfully shared his passion for music with everyone, whether one-on-one during private lessons or for the masses in public performances. One of his greatest joys has been performing in the Springfield Symphony’s annual Young Peoples Concerts, one of which you may have attended as a fifth grader. Although Sam was dealt a set back during a three year battle with cancer a few years ago, he returned to take his place among his friends and peers with the Springfield Symphony to pursue his love for music.

Sam will be greatly missed by the entire Springfield Symphony Association, as well as the patrons and children that interact with him during our concerts and programs. It is for these reasons, that I believe he should be honored with a proclamation from you.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of my request.

Sincerely,
Ron Spigelman, Music Director/Conductor
Springfield Symphony
